2024 G.N.S Foundation’s Sickle Cell Screening and Awareness Creation

On Friday, June 7th, 2024, the G.N.S Foundation undertook a significant initiative to combat sickle cell disease through a comprehensive screening and awareness campaign. This event was held at the Shelter for Abused Children Home in Osu, where the foundation’s efforts reached a substantial number of vulnerable children. The day’s activities were geared towards identifying potential sickle cell cases early and educating the community on the importance of early detection and management of the disease.

The foundation’s dedicated team worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this event. Over 200 school children were provided with nutritious meals, reflecting the foundation’s holistic approach to health and well-being. This initiative not only aimed to screen for sickle cell disease but also to provide essential nourishment to the children, ensuring they had the energy and health needed to participate fully in the day’s activities.

In addition to the meals, the G.N.S Foundation successfully screened 150 children for sickle cell disease. This screening is a critical step in the fight against this hereditary blood disorder, which can cause severe health complications if not managed properly. Early detection through screening allows for timely medical interventions, which can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected. The foundation’s efforts in this regard are a testament to their commitment to improving the health outcomes of children in vulnerable communities.

The event was further enriched by the presence of seasoned resource persons who provided invaluable education on sickle cell disease. Dr. Paul Ennin, CEO of Airport Women Hospital, and Dr. Kwabena Oppong Amoako, a medical expert from Korle Bu Sickle Cell Institute, shared their expertise and insights. Their contributions were complemented by the involvement of Ghanaian celebrities Okyeame Kwame and Nana Aba Anamoah, who helped amplify the message of awareness. The event was graced by the Guest of Honor, Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, former Minister of State, alongside Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, MP for La Dade Kotopon Constituency.

Through interactive sessions and educational materials, the children and their caregivers were informed about the nature of sickle cell disease, its symptoms, and the importance of regular health check-ups. By empowering the community with knowledge, the G.N.S Foundation is fostering a proactive approach to health that can help mitigate the effects of sickle cell disease and other health challenges. This event highlights the foundation’s ongoing dedication to community health and their pivotal role in advocating for the well-being of children in need.

This project is dedicated to our late Administrator Richard Akwagiram who passed on the 19th of April 2024 through Sickle cell disease.
