World Sickle Cell Day
On the 19th 0f June 2020, the Coalition of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) NGOs celebrated the World Sickle Cell. The day was marked with series of activities. The Coalition was made up of G.N.S Foundation, Sickle Life, Peer Foundation, Sickle Strong Warriors Foundation and Sickle Cell Awareness Initiative. The day was celebrated in a memorable way.
The theme for the World Sickle Cell day 2020 which was marked on the 19th of June 2020 was “Combacting Sickle Cell Disease Through Stakeholder Support”. Partners for this event were Ghana Society of Haematology (GhASH), Novartis, National Blood Service-Ghana, and Vodafone Ghana Foundation.
The day started with a blood donation exercise and sickle cell disease screening at the Southern Zonal Blood center, Korle Bu. There was free SCD tests for all blood donors. Donation exercise lasted from 8am to 2pm. There was also a press briefing at 10am and this was held at GRNMA Greater Accra Regional Secretariat. There were about 10 media houses present.
This was followed with virtual tree planting exercise for fallen warriors and also a donation to Sickle Cell Clinic, Korle Bu. These activities were led by one of the Executive directors of the G.N.S Foundation in the person of Mrs. Sandra Ayivor. Items donated included gloves, nose masks, veronica buckets, sanitizers, bleach, soap, tissue, Infra-Red thermometers etc.
A webinar was organized with the topic the role of government and healthcare workers in Sickle Cell Disease management. There was also a panel discussion on the role of patients, care-givers and patient groups in Sickle Cell Disease management.
The G.N.S Foundation joined Vodafone Foundation’s team of doctors in the evening to crown the day by interacting with callers at the Vodafone health line center in addressing all heath issues and educating callers on Sickle Cell Disease.
